Parasite Control & Prevention

Year-round parasite prevention is essential to protect your pet from internal & external parasites.

Parasites are sneaky creatures that are a constant threat to your pet. Parasite prevention is the responsibility of all pet parents as parasites are highly transmissible and some are zoonotic. Zoonotic parasites can transfer between species including humans. Regardless of the season, your pet needs protection from parasites year-round as they can cause long-term damage.

What parasites does my pet need protection from?

Your pet can be infected by internal or external parasites. Internal parasites are dangerous as they can go undetected for a long time before your pet shows signs of illness. Internal parasites include hookworms, heartworms, roundworms and coccidia. To detect internal parasites your veterinarian will perform a blood test. External parasites can be diagnosed with physical examination, they include ear mites, fleas, ticks, mange mites and ringworm.

How do parasites affect my pet?

When your pet is infected with parasites you may notice the following changes:

  1. Itching
  2. Swollen belly
  3. Redness of the skin
  4. Brown or black discharge in the ear
  5. Lethargy

These signs don’t always show up until the infestation is advanced which is why prevention is key. If you’ve noticed these symptoms in your pet, contact your veterinarian at 613-829-0220 or 613-843-1334.

What can I do to protect my pet from parasites?

Year-round prevention is your pet’s best chance at avoiding a parasitic infestation. Even in the cold months some parasites can survive within the home and affect your pet. Prevention medication must be administered on a strict schedule to be fully effective. There are preventatives that can protect your pet from multiple parasites, we encourage you to ask your veterinarian what options are available for your pet.

Do indoor pets need parasite protection?

Yes! It’s widely believed that indoor pets are free from parasite infections. This is not true. Parasites like ticks and fleas can get inside the home on clothing, shoes and other animals. Even if you live in a high-rise apartment it’s still possible for your pet to be affected by parasites.
